John R. Edwards When I came to San Diego in 1957, I was politically naive. I had been a student all my life. Politics happened in the world around me. However, I worked at the Generous Defense Company, making missiles for the United States Air Force. We worried about the Russians; they were building missiles too. With their missiles, they put a man in orbit around the earth and returned him back to earth, safely. So, at the time, they seemed to have an edge. So, it was back to work building missiles. It was a busy time in San Diego, too.
USSR was communist; they were the bad guys. I worked as an anti-communist helping make better missiles; so, it was a small step to be anti-communist. Anti-communist were also anti-socialist , anti-big government. Democrats were more the party of big government; so, I became a Republican. My family was poor Democrat; therefore, I broke away from them. But, as a Republican I had to hold my nose and vote for what I saw as the lesser of two bad choices i.e. Bob Dole, George Bush I, John McCain and others. Ronald Reagan was a very good choice. President Trump is a work in progress; but he is moving the economy, dealing with China, North Korea, Europe, Canada, Mexico and a border wall with minimal help from Republicans in Congress.
